Why upgrade your switchboard?

Many homes in Melbourne’s west still run on ceramic rewireable fuses, or a board with a single safety switch covering everything. A modern switchboard with individual RCBO protection cuts the power in milliseconds when something goes wrong, and stops one faulty appliance blacking out the whole house.

It’s also the first step for solar, batteries, EV chargers, air conditioning and kitchen renovations, which all need spare capacity and proper protection.

Signs your switchboard needs an upgrade

  • Ceramic fuses with fuse wire, or a black backing panel that may contain asbestos
  • No safety switch, or one safety switch protecting every circuit
  • Breakers that trip often, or lights that dim when appliances start
  • Adding solar, a battery, an EV charger, air conditioning or a new kitchen
  • Selling, renting out or insuring the property

What’s included

  • Site inspection and a fixed written quote
  • New enclosure, main switch and RCBO safety switches on every final circuit
  • Surge protection option
  • Circuit labelling and testing to AS/NZS 3000
  • Certificate of Electrical Safety on completion
  • Liaising with your distributor if a power shutdown or meter work is needed

How much does it cost?

Most residential switchboard upgrades in Melbourne cost between $1,200 and $2,500, depending on the number of circuits, whether the enclosure needs replacing and whether the board is mounted on asbestos. We give you a fixed price before we start.

FAQ

Common questions

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

Most homes are done in half a day to a day, with the power off for part of that time. We’ll tell you the expected shutdown window in advance.

What’s the difference between an RCD and an RCBO?

An RCD protects a group of circuits against electric shock. An RCBO combines that protection with a circuit breaker for a single circuit, so a fault only cuts power to that one circuit.

Do rental properties need safety switches?

Victoria’s rental minimum standards require power outlets and lighting circuits to be connected to a switchboard with circuit breakers and RCD safety switches.

What if my switchboard has asbestos?

We’ll identify it during the quote and include the correct handling in the price, so there are no surprises on the day.
